S.I.E.P. LIEUTENANT STITCHIE — “THE GOVERNOR”
Today Would Have Been His 61st Birthday
Today, 29 September 2026, should have been a day of celebration for one of Jamaica’s most distinctive musical voices. Lieutenant Stitchie, born Cleveland “Cleve” Laing on 29 September 1965, would have celebrated his 61st birthday today. Instead, the reggae and dancehall community is mourning his passing at the age of 60, just one day before his birthday.
Known throughout the music world as “The Governor,” Lieutenant Stitchie emerged during the 1980s and became recognised for his incredible rapid-fire delivery, humour, storytelling and unmistakable lyrical style. Songs including “Wear Yuh Size” and “Natty Dread” helped establish his reputation during an important period in dancehall history.

His talent eventually carried him beyond Jamaica and onto the international stage. In 1988, Stitchie signed with Atlantic Records, becoming one of the Jamaican dancehall artists of that era to secure a major international recording deal. His catalogue from this period included albums such as The Governor, Wild Jamaican Romances and Rude Boy.
But the story of Lieutenant Stitchie was about much more than dancehall success.
Following a serious car accident in 1997, Stitchie experienced a profound spiritual transformation, became a born-again Christian and redirected his musical career towards gospel reggae. The same energy, lyrical ability and distinctive delivery that had made him famous in dancehall were now being used to communicate his Christian faith and an inspirational message.
It was a remarkable transformation — from dancehall entertainer to gospel minister and messenger — and it became an important part of the legacy he would leave behind.
Beyond the recording studio and stage, Stitchie was also known for his work as an educator, author and humanitarian. In 2021, Jamaica recognised his contribution to the country’s music with the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer (OD).
His final years brought enormous challenges. In September 2024, Stitchie suffered a debilitating stroke that severely affected his health, speech and mobility. He continued receiving care as his family, friends, fellow artists and supporters rallied around him.

Sadly, on 28 September 2026, Lieutenant Stitchie passed away — just one day before what would have been his 61st birthday.
That makes today particularly emotional.
Instead of simply saying goodbye, today we can also celebrate the birthday, life and extraordinary musical journey of Lieutenant Stitchie — a man who travelled from Jamaica’s dancehall culture to international stages and ultimately dedicated another chapter of his life and music to his faith.
For those who remember the early dancehall years, he will forever be The Governor. For those who followed his later journey, he became a powerful voice within gospel reggae. And for Jamaican music history, his career represents a unique bridge between two very different musical worlds.
From Dancehall to Gospel.
From The Governor to a messenger of faith.
The music changed, but the distinctive voice remained.
🎂🕊️ Happy Heavenly 61st Birthday, Lieutenant Stitchie.
29 September 1965 – 28 September 2026
May condolences and strength go out to his family, friends, fellow artists and everyone whose life was touched by his music and ministry.
Your music lives on. Your message continues to inspire. Your contribution to Jamaican music will never be forgotten.
